Successful incident drill at BUTTING Könnern

On 16 August 2024, a large-scale fire drill took place on the premises of BUTTING Könnern. The exercise, which was carried out in collaboration with the ABC specialist service and the Könnern fire brigade, is of particular importance to the pipe manufacturer. As a so-called "hazardous incident company" with potentially dangerous substances, the regular inspection and optimisation of safety precautions are important to the company in order to ensure the safety of employees, neighbours and the environment.

As part of the exercise, an "accident with a forklift" scenario was simulated, which subsequently led to an extension of the situation to a "hazardous goods accident". A total of 133 emergency services with 33 vehicles were involved. The exercise began at 17:10 and ended successfully at 20:42.

Erik Hams, Head of Commercial Services and Fire Safety Officer at BUTTING Könnern, commented immediately after the event: "Today's exercise was both challenging and very informative. I was particularly impressed by the precise and structured approach of everyone involved. Despite the challenging conditions - 30 degrees Celsius and hot and humid weather - all the emergency services, including our own employees, worked together extremely well. I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved, especially the firefighters who dedicated their free time to our safety."

BUTTING Könnern is subject to the requirements of the Hazardous Incident Ordinance (12th BlmSchV), which prescribes particularly high safety standards. This ordinance serves to protect against accidents involving hazardous substances and ensures that manufacturing companies such as BUTTING Könnern do everything possible to minimise potential hazards.

"At BUTTING, we attach great importance not only to ensuring the safety of our employees and neighbours, but also to protecting our environment. Our safety protocols are designed to respond quickly in the event of an incident and minimise the impact on the environment. The regular incident drills are an essential element in ensuring that our staff can act in an efficient and coordinated manner in the event of an emergency. By strictly adhering to and continuously improving our safety measures, we are making an important contribution to protecting people and nature, " says Andreas Tietje, Director Production at BUTTING Könnern.
